The hearts of educators around the state are heavy after the racially motivated attack in our Buffalo community in May. Not only were three of the victims NYSUT members (Margus Morrison, Pearl Young, and Aaron Salter, Jr.), but the attack occurred in the heart of a neighborhood in close proximity to two Buffalo public schools.
At this time, NYSUT and its 600,000 members who work in or are retired from New York's schools, colleges, and healthcare facilities would like to support the families and the community impacted by this devastating attack. We have established a scholarship fund that will support the family members of shooting victims as well as high school seniors who live in the neighborhood (ZIP code 14208) and are graduating and heading into higher education now and in the coming years.
NYSUT has chosen Say Yes Buffalo, an education-focused nonprofit in Buffalo that administers a city-wide scholarship program for all graduates of public and charter high schools, to partner with us to administer this fund. We want all NYSUT members who are able to join this effort to turn tragedy into something positive for young people affected by the events of May 14.
